About the Vietnamese Church Plant – Bankstown 2026
St Paul’s Anglican Bankstown is preparing to launch a new Vietnamese-language congregation in early 2026 to reach the thousands of Vietnamese migrants who call Sydney’s south-west home.
With more than 30,000 Vietnamese speakers in the Canterbury-Bankstown region—and with Bankstown itself holding the largest Vietnamese population in Sydney outside Cabramatta—this is a remarkable gospel opportunity.
At present, our Diocese has only one Vietnamese-speaking Anglican congregation (in Cabramatta). There are none in Bankstown or surrounding suburbs—areas with some of the highest concentrations of Vietnamese migrants in Australia.
Under God, this new church will proclaim Christ clearly in Vietnamese, build a vibrant and Christ-centred Christian community, and disciple believers to take the gospel into one of the most unreached and spiritually needy language groups in our city.
About our Lead Planter – Khanh Nguyen
Khanh Nguyen will serve as the lead planter of the Vietnamese Church Plant in Bankstown.
Khanh was born and raised in a Christian family in southern Vietnam and came to personal faith in the Lord Jesus during high school. God confirmed His call on Khanh’s life through years of full-time ministry in Vietnam, where Khanh served extensively among the poor, the sick, the paralysed, the blind, and among unreached communities.
Khanh, along with his wife Phuong and daughter Emma, moved to Sydney in 2022 to train for full-time gospel work among Vietnamese people. He has completed theological studies at Moore College, has been assessed and approved as a church planter by City to City, and has been ordained as a deacon in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney.
Khanh brings pastoral experience, cultural understanding, evangelistic zeal, and a heart for Vietnamese migrants who have yet to hear or believe the gospel. With your prayer and partnership, he hopes to plant and grow Vietnamese congregations throughout Bankstown and the wider south-west Sydney region.
Where and When?
The new Vietnamese congregation is planned to begin in early 2026 as part of St Paul’s Anglican Bankstown.
This work coincides with a major Diocesan redevelopment of the St Paul’s site, which will provide a ministry-equipped building strategically placed:
- a few minutes’ walk from the upcoming Bankstown Metro Station
- across the road from a Western Sydney University campus
- near the new Bankstown Hospital redevelopment
This places the new church within reach of Vietnamese families, university students, recent migrants, young professionals, and multigenerational households who live, study, and work in the area.
How can you partner with us?
This church plant represents a crucial, time-sensitive opportunity. After more than 20 years of decline, St Paul’s Bankstown is experiencing renewed growth—and now, with facilities being renewed and the population rapidly expanding, the door is wide open for strategic gospel ministry among Vietnamese people.
Because the parish is unable to fund the work in its early years, the Vietnamese church plant will rely entirely on external partnership for its initial ministry.

- for suitable and affordable venues for this new church’s gatherings through the stages of its growth
- that the new congregation would grow deeply in faith, love, and unity
- for courage and clarity for Khanh and Phuong in proclaiming Christ
- for evangelistic fruit through playgroups, English classes, and community outreach
- for doors to open among Vietnamese students, young professionals, and families
- for God’s provision of funding and for visa processes to be completed smoothly
Above all, we long for God to rescue many Vietnamese people from darkness to the light of Christ.

3. Financial Support
To enable Khanh to minister full-time and to allow the new congregation time to grow toward self-sufficiency, we need to raise approximately $80,000 per year for the first three years.
This includes:
- ministry staffing
- visa-related sponsorship costs to secure long-term residency
- operational and ministry expenses
We have secured grants covering almost half of our first-year needs.
We are praying for partners who can help meet the remaining amount through one-off gifts or ongoing monthly support.
